I have a new favorite book, The Lost Words, by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris.
Five years ago the editors of the 10,000 entry Oxford Chil-dren’s Dictionary made a decision to drop some fifty words related to nature—words like fern, willow and starling. This was done to make room for new, seemingly more im-portant words for kids to know now nowadays—words like broadband and cut and paste.
MacFarlane, a noted British author, and Jackie Morris, an artist have written a beautiful children’s book of ‘spells’ which can be used to conjure these words and keep them alive in our minds and hearts. Just to give you an idea, here is the ‘spell’ for dandelion.
