Have You Heard?

Have you heard? The Chiefs are in the Super Bowl!

Of course you have heard, unless you have been trapped in your basement, or in a coma for the last two weeks.
It is hard not to see red these days. It is everywhere. Go Chiefs! And whatever the final score of the game is today, one thing is for sure. We are not alone. When they prevail we will be cele-brating with thousands of fellow Kansas Citians. Everyone we meet will know about the game. We will share moments of joy with strangers.

Sure, we hope for a win. As Coach Andy Reid said, “This is America, of course we want to win.” But, God forbid, should they lose, we will just as certainly commiserate as a community. We will be sad together. We will be reminded by strangers, “There’s always next year.” It will be hard, but we will get through it together.

So before the game, while we still feel the anticipation that the world championship is only a game away, let us take a deep breath and give thanks for the gift of sports that helps us remem-ber that we really are a community.
Lately I have started telling people who come in to see if the Deacons can help them with an overdue water bill, someone starting chemo, or someone going through counseling, “Life is a team sport, not an individual event. It feels like it is just us some-times, but we all need help to make it.”

One of the things I like most about Patrick Mahomes, the brilliant young MVP quarterback for the Chiefs, is his humility. He is al-ways first to give credit to others on the team when they win and first to take responsibility for a loss.” He is one of a kind, but he is always part of a team. I hope he never loses that nor do we. It is too heavy load for even for his muscular shoulders to carry the hopes and dreams of a whole city.

So what else is there to say except, “How ‘bout those… CHIEFS!”
